A digital multimeter's count refers to the maximum number the multimeter can display before changing ranges, and how many digits it can display in total. This can affect the accuracy of the measurements displayed by the DMM. For example, a 4½-digit DMM can also be represented as a 19,999 or 20,000 DMM that displays counts.
